Around four that afternoon Letty led Gertrude and Mabel up a short flight of metal stairs to Verna’s apartment in one of the rectangular buildings of the Woodside Senior Housing. Just inside against the windows was a leather sectional sofa that could easily seat eight. Spread around the room and intermingled with a jungle of overgrown green plants was an assortment of hand carved wooden perches. “Marriage is a lot like a salad,” Gertrude told Leticia (Letty) Wisp. Gertrude folded her new green sweat pants and colorful tees. “Some people go through their entire lives eating nothing but iceberg lettuce.
